The World Health Organization in Vanuatu, jointly with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Vanuatu, invites application from women and men for the position of National Diseases Surveillance Coordinator for an initial 12 months appointment based in Port Vila. This position is funded by WHO for the first 12 months. The post holder will be

assigned to the newly established national Communicable Disease Surveillance, Research and Response Unit, Ministry of Health, Port Vila.



Short term contract of one year, starting as soon as possible, may be extended for one year based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding from WHO or from MOH and interested health partners. The 1st contract will include a probationary period of three (3) months. Selected candidate should provide a medical clearance by an

appointed United Nations physician in Port Vila and endorsed by WHO regional medical service.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Managing the activities of the Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response Unit in the Ministry of Health, Port Vila

2) Works closely with relevant Ministry of Health staff and staff at the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Liaison Office in Port Vila and South Pacific Regional Office in Suva to coordinate the influenza sentinel surveillance system and plan the multi sectoral approach to pandemic preparedness in Vanuatu

3) Be expected to take the lead in setting up, managing and coordinating the syndromic surveillance system for communicable diseases, including reporting of data and training of health care workers in using the system

4) In collaboration with the Director Public Health and colleagues from WHO and SPC, coordinate Vanuatu’s influenza sentinels surveillance system: monitor flow of specimens, manage stocks, order supplies and equipment, and enter and analyze data

5) Communicate daily with the Vila Central Hospital and with the participating sentinel sites to monitor flow of specimens, lab results, stocks, etc.

6) Produces summary report on at least a 4-weekly basis.

Interested applicant must possess the following requirements:

Criteria:

- Excellent organizational skills, a proactive disposition, the Ability to work as a member of a team and independently; Professional qualification in biological and social sciences; Training in health

and/or epidemiology would be an advantage

- Excellent computer skills and working knowledge of databases, the internet, search engines and email; Strong planning and organizational skills, having the ability to handle multiple tasks

independently with varying timelines; Strong interpersonal skills, working positively and sensitively with staff, community members, and constituents

- Minimum of three years experience working in a related programme area; Fluency in written and spoken english, bislama and some knowledge of french would be an advantage.

Salary:

120-150,000 VUV per month.
