| RMIT University, Deakin University, the University of the South Pacific in Fiji and Oxfam Australia are undertaking a three year study in the Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The study focuses on the vulnerability and resilience of Pacific households to economic shocks, while also examining the impact of the recent food, fuel and economic crises on |
| Pacific households. The project will specifically focus on the plight of both women and youth. The three questions that the research will consider are: What has been the impact of the recent food, fuel and economic shocks on peoples’ lives in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands? In these contexts, why are certain people and households more vulnerable |
| or resilient to these global economic shocks? What policies and strategies most effectively reduce vulnerability or increase the resilience of people to global economic shocks in these contexts? |
| We are looking for two experienced and credentialed team leaders that will oversee and manage two teams of researchers of up to 10 people during field work. One survey team will carry out surveys in three separate locations in the south of Vanuatu (Efate and Tanna) with the other team carrying out surveys in three locations in the north (Santo and |
| Banks Islands). Successful candidates will be employed for 5 weeks commencing in around 20th June 2011. This will include one week (or part thereof) of group training in Port Vila, following by three weeks of fieldwork and approximately one week (or part thereof) of group debriefing in Port Vila following the field work. Those who are not shortlisted |
| will not be contacted for an interview. On these field trips, the team leaders will be required to: |
| 1) Oversee the research operations in three locations across Vanuatu |
| 2) Conduct a daily debrief with researchers and write daily field notes with their observations, including addressing any ethical issues that have come up |
| 3) Liaise directly with the community and be available for feedback |
| 4) Manage researchers including managing any breaches of the code of conduct or ethics guidelines |
| 5) Carry out a small number of surveys in each location. |
| Interested applicant must possess the following requirements: |
| Criteria: |
| - Have experience leading a team and have experience doing field research; Have demonstrated strong communication skills; Are able to give and receive feedback; Have an attention to detail. |
| Salary: |
| Team leaders will be paid at the rate of VT 37,000 per week for their services (plus a per diem meal allowance), in addition to transport and accommodation costs while in the field. |
